Here is a press release/interview I did for the Mr Price Pro. I’m alright with it. No pressure. I decided to post it up here cos of the bit about the Smith family being so hospitable and amazing to me over the years. You guys rock, Thank you. Check out their backpackers – The Secret Spot Surf Camp.

“Stacey Guy’s plans and preparations for 2010 may have suffered an early setback when she fractured her ankle in February, but her determination, dedication and desire to return to action ahead of the Mr Price Pro Ballito has inspired a timely recovery.

Since the injury, the talented Team Red surfer has resolutely thrown herself into a training and rehabilitation programme as she looks to return to full fitness ahead of the fast-approaching Mr Price Pro Ballito.

Expected to return to the water in early May, Guy should have a good six or seven weeks of preparation under the belt by the time the 6A PST Mr Price Pro Women’s event kicks-off from July 2-4. The women’s event along with the 6A Pro Junior event precedes the 5-Star rated Men’s World Tour event from July 5-11.

“I’ve been doing some training recently to strengthen my ankle so I have been bike riding, SUP’ing and swimming a little,” 25-year-old Guy explained. “I haven’t really trained much in the past but have been forced to since my injury… I’m determined to get fit and start surfing at 100% again.”

Last year, the Mr Price Pro Ballito women’s event was cancelled for the first time in this history of the competition as a result of gigantic swells, and Guy said it was a prime example of what mother nature could throw at you.

“I’ve been going to Ballito for around 10 years now, and that’s the biggest I have ever seen the swell get – it was huge and out of control. You never really know what to expect in surfing, it’s up to the ocean and mother nature, and you just have to deal with whatever the ocean throws at you.”

However, as a host of international stars battle it out in the 6A women’s event –  which is the biggest on the domestic circuit – Guy will undoubtedly be looking to take advantage of her familiarity with the Ballito surf spots.

Despite hailing from Cape Town, the small North Coast town is a “second home” to Guy, and a place she says she just loves to visit.

“My best mate, Tammy-lee Smith, is a Ballito local and we have been surfing together for years. Her family home is like my second home. They have been so hospitable over the years and have also had to put up with a bit of mischief from all of us. I enjoy the waves up there and also the small town vibe. It’s cool and really I like it. It’s one of my happy places.”

Indeed, she will certainly be hoping it is also a happy place for her on July 4 when the women’s event comes to an end, as a good result would certainly cap off an incredible comeback after her February 7 mishap.”

Cute.

blog contest

ahhh. So. Tammy Frikkin Lee Smith is now a “BLOGGER”. I’m fine with it.  BUT.  She has already made it a contest. Everything  Tammy does is a contest. Everything.  She has to be the best. Table Tennis. Surfing. Running. Coffee Drinking. Breathing. and now BLOGGING. When we play Table Tennis she cheats. When we surf she snakes me. She can have running, I don’t care for running. I win hands down when it comes to coffee. Breathing is even at this stage. And now “BLOGGING”.

BLOGGING” ? ? Blogging. Blogging. say it over and over and over and it sounds stupid.

Anyway. It seems I better up my game.

How to break your ankle 101

| | |

Tammy-Lee Smith has this to say about today :

My friend Stacey goes hard when she surfs!  She likes to get high… in the air… on her surfboard.  Today proved this when she tried her trade mark frontside punt but Salmon Bay backwash was cruel.  She came off second best to the shallow bumpy sand bank waves and tweaked her ankle.  I personally thought it was broken so I bought her NikNaks to make her feel better. It still might be broken, she’s gotta get x-rays  She was brave. “

Tammy called me brave ! First time ever. Ya. So. I messed up my ankle. it hurts. It’s a now a Kankle. I went for a frontside air on a tiny wave and landed SO wrong on my back foot – its beyond swollen and I have been taking painkillers ALL day. yoh.

I have to have X-rays tomorrow morning at Alberlito Hospital to check out what the vibe is.

I have pics. Cos yup, we are on a photo shoot and Pierre is always pointing his LARGE lens at us.

BELOW IS A SEQUENCE OF THE WAVE I BROKE MY ANKLE ON :

1st frame….2nd frame…..and 3rd frame is split seconds before I landed so very wrong.  I’m about to cry when Tanah and Mich are helping me up the beach. Shot guys.

RED shoot Day 01

| | |

In Ballito for a Mr Price/RED Surf team shoot.

Arrived in KZN around 08:00 Friday morning, got some admin done in Durbs – visited one of my sponsors ISLAND STYLE and my board shaper BARON STANDER. Got to Ballito early afternoon and went straight down to Sunrise Point for the first shoot. It was around 3-4ft, dead low and blowing onshore NE. If you have ever surfed Sunrise you will know that it gets super heavy and Friday was no different. For some reason I decided to surf the Quadpod (WTF!?) and got worked – not enough drive/hold/complete opposite of the board I should have been riding out there. Had a few fun waves, nothing great. The boys were tearing. Here are some of the shots (c) Pierre Tostee

Thanks to OAKLEY SA for putting on such an awesome camp. We have all improved and learnt ALOTTTT. Watch out for the Oakley Team this year folks.

O.C.A.M.P Days 1 + 2 +3

Friday Day 1 - Woke up early, like really early. 3:30 early. Left Cape Town at 4am. Got to J Bay around 12:00 to find CRANKING 4-5ft waves. We all got out there asap and ended up having two rad sessions. Greg and Davey were on form, it’s crazy how well those guys surf Jbay. It’s such a difficult wave and they have it SO dialed. Makes me jealous. haha. I also saw Tammy-Lee get a cracker. That also made me jealous haha. From what i saw Royden was the standout, he rips at Jbay. He gets so critical and vert – it’s silly. He’s such a chilled, mellow dude but when he hits the water he goes nuts. I got some bombs – definitely one of the best surfs I have had out there. Oh ya – I saw Shaun J doing some RAD frontside fins free turns and a mad air reverse. I’m learning from these boys. Friday night we had a meet and greet with the Oakley South Africa family and we got spoilt ! Thanxxxx guys.

Saturday Day 2 - 6:00 wake up call. We got robbed. In Seal Point. They took laptops, video and camera gear. Not Rad. Learnt pre heat warm-up techniques with Lawrence. Got to the surf mid-morning. The Beachie. 3ft. A couple bigger sets. Left Bank. Coaching with Hynsie. Royden got so pitted. Shaun got upside down on a backside air reverse. I got a couple. Davey put his fins out on every turn. Royden made a SICK frontside double grab. Tammy went vert. Lungani dropped in on me and smashed the wave all the way to the beach. Matt is 12 and surfs like he is 14. Greg didn’t surf cos ETV came to interview us all. Sat arvo we had a life coaching sesh with Jackie followed by some average howling onshore baby waves at the point. Still fun though. Dinner at Barrons. Lank tired – BED. Sleep.

Sunday Day 3 - 6:00 wake up. 7:00 warm-ups with Lawrence. 7:30 till 12:00 mock heat coaching with Hynsie. Hard work. Fun waves way down the beach. Lunch. Down Time… That’s right now. West is up////// Hoping for fun waves later.
